Dec 29, 2015 · Hi, I'm on the Hero Alpha, and have ram that has worked fully on multiple brands of Z170 boards (Gigabyte, MSI) and currently works and boots in slots A2/B2. However, I wanted to make sure ALL ram slots are functioning, so I took them out, and placed them in the other two slots, A1/B1. Putting them so gives me Q Code 53, which is ram issues.

A2 is second ram slot away fromcpu and B2 is the far right slot. CountMike said: Dual or single channel may be just a function of RAM sticks being in pairs in each of 2 IMCs (Internal Memory Controller) in the processor. A pair of same RAM sticks in one IC channel will run in dual channel.

Some Asus boards require the A1 B1 slots to be filled first. If you try to do A2 B2, the machine will not post. No damage will be done. The bios expects to find A1 and B1 to be populated.
I forgot to mention that I actually tried A1 and B1 thinking they were the defaults. When I looked at the manual, it actually calls out A2 and B2 as the slots to use when installing two DIMMS. When I had the sticks in A1 and B1 the board did not post.
